Sovereign Ranks (Rulers)
Emperor / Empress Ruler of an empire (multiple kingdoms or peoples)
King / Queen Sovereign ruler of a kingdom
Prince / Princess (sovereign) In some states (e.g., Monaco, Liechtenstein), a prince is the ruling monarch. (Below king, above duke when sovereign)
High Nobility (Peers)
Archduke / Archduchess Rare title (mainly used in Habsburg lands); ranks above duke
Grand Duke / Grand Duchess Ruler of a grand duchy (e.g., Luxembourg)
Duke / Duchess Highest rank of the regular nobility
Middle Nobility
Marquess / Marquis / Margrave Historically ruled border territories (marches)
Count / Earl Earl is the English equivalent of Count
Viscount / Viscountess Deputy or subordinate to a count
Baron / Baroness Lowest rank of the peerage
Lesser Nobility & Gentry (Not Peers)
Baronet Hereditary title. Addressed as “Sir”. Not part of the peerage
Knight / Dame Could be both Hereditary and Non-hereditary (personal) title
Below the Nobility
Esquire Gentleman rank (historical/legal)
Gentleman / Lady Courtesy title for the social class (no formal title)
